Abbas postpones Palestinian elections to September 2027
Original: Abbas postpones Palestinian elections, sets presidential poll for September 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed planned elections, scheduling the next presidential vote for September 2027. The decision pushes back a long-delayed national vote that had already been postponed from 2021, deepening concerns about the political future of the Palestinian Authority and the prospects for Palestinians in the occupied territories to choose new leadership in the near term.
Why now: The postponement affects Palestinian leadership at a time of intense regional crisis and scrutiny of Abbas's legitimacy.
