The Palestinian Authority has formally postponed long-awaited elections, according to a New York Times report dated October 10, 2026. The delay comes despite pressure from Western governments, who have pushed Palestinian leadership under President Mahmoud Abbas to hold national votes. The move is likely to draw criticism from those who see elections as key to political renewal in the occupied territories.
Why now: The formal postponement defies Western diplomatic pressure, making the state of Palestinian governance and democracy a live political controversy.
