New York mayor Zohran Mamdani's efforts to persuade President Trump appear to have reached their limits following a shooting involving ICE agents. The episode has strained his attempts to soften the administration's immigration enforcement posture in New York City, drawing attention to the fragile balance between the mayor's outreach to Washington and growing tensions over ICE operations in the city.

Why now: An ICE shooting has just tested Mamdani's high-profile diplomatic relationship with Trump, raising questions about how much influence the New York mayor really has.
