NFL's push for an 18-game season draws criticism
Original: The NFL can't survive 17 games. Why is it trying to sell 18? https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7670397/2026/10/10/nfl-inj
The Athletic and The New York Times are running analysis questioning the NFL's reported interest in expanding the regular season to 18 games. The piece argues the league already struggles to cope with injuries across the current 17-game schedule, and that adding another game would put players at greater risk. It frames the proposal as being driven by revenue rather than player welfare.
Why now: Debate over player safety and an expanded schedule is resurfacing amid reports the league is considering an 18th regular-season game.
