Patches Advance Removal of Linux x32 ABI
Original: Patches Updated To Begin Removing The Linux x32 ABI https://www.phoronix.com/news/Patches-Removing-Linux-x32-ABI # Linux
Updated patch series has been posted to begin removing the x32 ABI from the Linux kernel, the niche interface that allows running 32-bit programs with 64-bit registers on x86-64 systems. The long-deprecated sub-architecture has seen little use, and kernel developers are now moving ahead with dropping it, a change open-source watchers say signals the end of x32 support.
Why now: Kernel developers have posted new patches to remove the rarely used x32 ABI, a notable housekeeping change for Linux users.
