President Emmanuel Macron has appealed to the French public to stay calm amid rioting across the country, urging citizens 'not to give in to pessimism' or the 'spirit of defeat' the nation has known in 1870 and 1940. Critics highlight his low approval rating of around 17% as they debate whether his appeal will calm tensions.

Why now: Riots and unrest across France, combined with Macron's very low approval rating, are drawing wide attention and criticism.
