Berlin marks Unity Day without German flags as Gaza demo proceeds
Original: Berlin forgets the black-red-gold for Unity Day, but not the Gaza demo
Commentators in Germany are debating Berlin's handling of German Unity Day, claiming the city downplayed national symbols such as the black-red-gold flag while allowing a pro-Palestinian demonstration to go ahead around the holiday. Critics argue authorities show more tolerance for Gaza-related protests than for patriotic displays, reigniting arguments over national identity and double standards in public life.
Why now: Many Germans see a double standard in the city permitting a Gaza demonstration while refraining from national flag displays on the Day of German Unity.
