A documentary produced entirely with generative AI has received its first official screening at the Venice International Film Festival, a landmark for a festival historically focused on traditional filmmaking. The news is drawing attention in Japan and internationally, with debate centering on whether AI-made works can count as documentaries and what the milestone means for the future of cinema.
