Amazon rainforest nears dangerous deforestation tipping point
Original: # News : The # Amazon is on the brink: 18% lost, tipping point is at 20-25%, devastating # biodiversity and # climate .🌴
Environmental campaigners are warning that roughly 18% of the Amazon rainforest has already been destroyed, with scientists estimating a tipping point at 20-25% deforestation. Beyond that threshold, large parts of the forest could shift irreversibly from rainforest to savanna, with devastating consequences for biodiversity, regional rainfall and the global climate. Activists are urging action against deforestation drivers such as palm oil production and calling for dietary change.
Why now: Renewed warnings that the Amazon is approaching an irreversible ecological tipping point are circulating among climate and conservation advocates.
