Japan's Tuna Buyer Says He Turned Somali Pirates into Fishermen
Original: Japan's Most Famous Tuna Buyer Says He Turned Somali Pirates into Fishermen
A well-known Japanese tuna buyer says he traveled to Somalia and persuaded former pirates to return to fishing, arguing that paying fair prices for their catch offered a better livelihood than ransom at sea. The story recounts how his purchases aimed to rebuild a local fishing economy and give ex-pirates a stake in legitimate trade. Readers are debating how credible or lasting such a claim is.
Why now: The unusual claim that commercial tuna buying helped convert pirates into fishermen is a striking story of commerce solving a security problem.
