Germany turns former coal mines into Europe's largest lake district
Original: Germany transforms former coal mines into Europe's largest lake landscape https://www.euronews.com/2026/04/14/almost-lik
Germany is converting its former open-pit coal mining region into Europe's largest artificial lake landscape, filling old mines to create a network of lakes often compared to Italy's Lake Como. The project in Lusatia, eastern Germany, is being watched as a model for post-coal economic transition, blending tourism, nature restoration and renewable energy ambitions.
Why now: The striking transformation of industrial coal country into a tourist lake region offers a hopeful example of the energy transition.
