IOM Warns Smugglers Target Children Migrating Alone to Europe
Original: IOM Chief Warns Smugglers Prey on Children as 20,800 of 31,100 Reached Europe Alone in 2025
The head of the International Organization for Migration has warned that people smugglers are preying on unaccompanied children, as new figures show that of 31,100 children who arrived in Europe in 2025, 20,800 — roughly two-thirds — made the journey alone. The agency says the numbers highlight growing risks faced by minors on migration routes and are renewing calls for stronger protection measures.
Why now: New 2025 figures on unaccompanied child arrivals in Europe have drawn attention to smuggler exploitation of minors.
