A new analysis of 543 US companies traded by members of Congress compares 2025 federal lobbying spending to market capitalization. Per $1 million of market cap, tech firms spend a median of $12, while pharma spends $55, telecom and media $63, and defense companies $85, the highest of the sectors examined. The figures are drawing attention as a measure of how intensely different industries invest in influencing Washington relative to their size.
Why now: The stark sector differences, especially defense and pharma outspending tech, make the data a talking point about industry influence in Congress.
