How Online Pornography Shaped Platform Capitalism
Original: Online Pornography Created the Model for Platform Capitalism
Jacobin argues that the online pornography industry pioneered the business model now common across platform capitalism: free content to draw mass audiences, heavy reliance on user uploads, data harvesting, advertising revenue and precarious gig-like labour. The piece suggests mainstream tech platforms later adopted and refined these mechanisms, making the adult industry an overlooked forerunner of today's digital economy.
Why now: A socialist publication has reframed the adult industry's history as the origin story of modern tech platforms, prompting debate about how the digital economy developed.
