Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is facing criticism from German politicians after travelling to Russia to attend Vladimir Putin's birthday celebrations. Critics in Germany argue the visit undermines the united Western stance against Moscow amid the war in Ukraine and damages Germany's credibility, with calls growing for Schroeder to be held accountable for his ongoing ties to the Kremlin.

Why now: Schroeder's continued personal closeness to Putin during the war in Ukraine is drawing fresh outrage in Germany and among allies.
