US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said an execution will be live streamed, while President Donald Trump appears to have paused plans for a war with Iran, according to the Guardian's First Thing briefing. The pairing of the two statements has drawn attention, with commentators weighing the severity of promising a broadcast execution against relief over easing tensions with Iran.

Why now: Two striking developments from the Trump administration, a live streamed execution pledge and a seeming de-escalation with Iran, landed at the same time.
