Jewish students block AfD politician from Halle synagogue memorial

Original: hans-thomas tillschneider

Jewish students in Halle (Saale) blocked AfD politician Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, deputy speaker of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, from entering the local synagogue during commemorations for the victims of the 2019 Halle attack, in which a right-wing extremist murdered two people. Reports say Tillschneider, considered part of the AfD's far-right wing, had wanted to attend the memorial ceremony. The confrontation has drawn national media attention.

Why now: The prominent AfD figure's attempted attendance at the Halle attack memorial, and students barring him from the synagogue, has sparked public debate over extremism and commemoration.
