Testimonies are being heard in the ongoing trial in Italy over the Cutro shipwreck, which killed dozens of migrants in February 2023. Coverage revisits the moment Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navanethem Pillay rebuked Italy, saying migrants are 'not a load of toxic waste'. The remarks are being recirculated as the court examines authorities' failure to intervene in time.
Why now: New testimony in the Cutro shipwreck trial has renewed attention on official responsibility and past criticism of Italy's response.
