Shirin Saeidi, a tenured political science professor at the University of Arkansas, was removed in December from her post as director of the King Fahd Center for Middle East Studies over social media posts critical of Israel. Commenters are calling the United States a fascist regime in response, arguing the removal shows suppression of pro-Palestinian or Israel-critical speech in American academia.

Why now: Her removal has reignited debate about academic freedom and alleged suppression of criticism of Israel at US universities.
