October 12: What Is Celebrated and Why It Divides

Original: que se celebra el 12 de octubre

Searches are surging around what October 12 commemorates. In Mexico, the date is officially marked as the Day of the Pluricultural Nation, replacing the former Columbus Day framing. Commentary, including pieces titled about what still unites people, reflects ongoing debate over whether the day should celebrate cultural diversity or be reconsidered as a symbol of colonization in the Americas.

Why now: The date of October 12 prompts annual public discussion and searches about its meaning and renaming across Spanish-speaking countries.
