Italian American commentator argues against celebrating Columbus Day
Original: I'm Italian American, but I Don't Celebrate Columbus Day. - Nick Gillespie
Nick Gillespie, an Italian American commentator, has made the case that he does not celebrate Columbus Day, arguing Italian Americans need not rally around the controversial explorer. The remarks tap into an ongoing debate over whether the holiday should honour Columbus or be replaced with Indigenous Peoples' Day, with some Italian Americans reassessing the tradition tied to their heritage.
Why now: The Columbus Day holiday is an annual flashpoint in debates over colonial history and Indigenous Peoples' Day.
