Philadelphia council explores city-run grocery store plan
Original: Council to explore creating a city-run grocery store to keep food costs down
Philadelphia City Council is moving to study whether the city should open and operate its own grocery store as a way to keep food prices down for residents. The proposal responds to gaps in affordable food access, and officials are expected to examine how a municipally run store would work and who it would serve.
Why now: Rising grocery costs and food access gaps have pushed city leaders to consider unconventional public solutions.
