Backyard astrophotographer captures the Milky Way with a smartphone
Original: Out in the back yard last night, setting up the seestars and trying to take some pictures of Scorpius (not scorpio!!! 😡)
An amateur astronomer spent the night in the back yard setting up Seestar smart telescopes to photograph the constellation Scorpius for a friend, and pointed a newer iPhone at the Milky Way as well. The 10-second phone exposure reportedly turned out far better than attempts with their previous phone, with possible zodiacal light also visible. A brief aside insists on the correct constellation name, Scorpius, not Scorpio.
Why now: Amateur stargazers are discussing how capable modern smartphones and smart telescopes have become for casual astrophotography.

- Out in the back yard last night, setting up the seestars and trying to take some pictures of Scorpius (not scorpio!!! 😡) for a friend and I thought I’d point the new(ish) phone at the milky way. Not terrible like the old phone. And maybe zodiacal light? 10 seconds with a iPhone… · cafuego@misanthrope.social · 18
