Three Turkish-owned cargo ships in European Union waters off Bulgaria were struck in what are described as suspected Russian drone attacks, sinking the Alfa Watan and leaving ten Egyptian and Syrian crew members missing. Reports say the incident underscores escalating risks to shipping in the Black Sea region as the war in Ukraine continues to spill over into international waters.
Why now: A reported attack on NATO-member Turkey's ships inside EU waters would mark a serious escalation of the Ukraine war onto European shipping.
