Original: Stephen A. Smith Apologizes For Comments On Lane Johnson’s Retirement To Focus On Mental Health

Stephen A. Smith has issued an apology after criticizing Philadelphia Eagles lineman Lane Johnson's decision to step away from football to focus on his mental health. Johnson, who previously took a 2021 leave for the same reason, said he needed to prioritize his well-being. The apology is drawing attention to how athletes' mental health struggles are discussed in sports media.

Why now: The clash between a prominent commentator and an athlete's mental health leave has sparked debate about sports media's treatment of mental health.
