Why Britain is being forced to revisit the Balfour Declaration
Original: “Why Britain is being forced to revisit the Balfour Declaration” by Soumaya Ghannoushi in Middle East Eye @ palestine@fe
Soumaya Ghannoushi argues in Middle East Eye that Britain is being compelled to re-examine the 1917 Balfour Declaration, the pledge that supported a Jewish national home in Palestine. She writes that Western politics long permitted criticism of Israel only within limits, and that changing circumstances are now pushing Britain to confront the declaration's legacy amid ongoing debate over its role in Palestine's history.
Why now: Ongoing conflict in Gaza and Palestine has renewed scrutiny of Britain's historical responsibility through the Balfour Declaration.
