UN says Afghan women arrested over makeup and dress code
Original: Afghan women facing arrest for wearing makeup and alleged dress code violations, UN says
The United Nations reports that women in Afghanistan are being arrested for wearing makeup and alleged violations of the Taliban's dress code. The disclosure adds to growing international concern over escalating restrictions on Afghan women, who already face bans on education, most work and public spaces. Rights groups and governments have repeatedly urged the Taliban authorities to reverse policies the UN has described as gender-based persecution.
Why now: The UN's account of women being detained over appearance signals a further crackdown on women's rights under Taliban rule, drawing international outrage.
