Philippine Coast Guard Evacuates Sailor from Ayungin Shoal
Original: Philippine Coast Guard Evacuates Navy Sailor from Ayungin Shoal Amid Chinese Blockade
The Philippine Coast Guard evacuated a sick Navy sailor from Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal) in the South China Sea, where Filipino troops are stationed aboard the grounded BRP Sierra Madre. The operation had to be carried out amid a continuing Chinese maritime blockade of the shoal, which has repeatedly complicated Philippine resupply and personnel missions in the disputed area.
Why now: Tensions between the Philippines and China over access to the contested shoal are escalating, and the evacuation highlights the risks to Filipino personnel there.
