Rescue dogs enlisted to aid desert wildlife crossings
Original: Sniffing for Solutions: Rescue Dogs and Desert Wildlife Crossings
Rescue dogs are being trained to help identify where desert wildlife move and where crossings should be built, in work highlighted by conservation group Wildlands Network. By sniffing out animal signs along desert routes, the dogs aim to guide planners in reducing roadkill and reconnecting fragmented habitats.
Why now: Interest in novel conservation methods that pair rescue dogs with infrastructure planning is drawing attention.
