Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni has won a parliamentary vote on changes to the electoral system that would introduce a 'bonus seat' mechanism, giving an advantage to the winning coalition. The reform has been controversial, with critics arguing it distorts proportional representation and entrenches the power of the largest bloc. Meloni's government argues it restores stability and governability to Italian politics.
Why now: The vote strengthens the governing majority's grip on Italian elections, drawing criticism from opponents of the reform.
