Guardian dog statues vandalised at Tomioka Hachimangu shrine

Original: 富岡八幡宮

One of the komainu guardian dog statues at Tomioka Hachimangu in Yokohama was damaged after being struck with a hammer. The shrine is asking anyone who spots a suspicious person not to approach them, but to report it to the shrine or police. The vandalism of the traditionally revered statues has drawn attention in Japan.

Why now: The deliberate damaging of sacred shrine statues is unusual and unsettling, prompting public concern and discussion.
