Texas carries out first US execution since botched Christa Pike lethal injection

Original: Texas set to carry out first US execution since botched lethal injection of Christa Pike https://www.theguardian.com/us-

Texas is preparing to execute Jamaal Howard, which would be the first execution in the United States since the lethal injection of Christa Pike in Tennessee was described as botched. Pike was convicted of a 1995 murder in Tennessee, and reports of problems during her procedure renewed scrutiny of lethal injection protocols. Death penalty opponents have again raised concerns about the method as Texas moves ahead.

Why now: The botched lethal injection of Christa Pike has intensified scrutiny of lethal injection, making this the first execution since that incident a focus of debate.
