Discussion is circulating about Italy's social climate, with claims that derogatory language is used freely and with little consequence. Critics argue the problem has worsened under the current right-wing conservative government, which they characterise as racist, queerphobic, misogynist, ableist and indifferent to the environment. The remarks reflect wider anxiety about the tone of public and political discourse in the country.

Why now: Ongoing debate about Italy's right-wing government and its perceived effect on hate speech and social attitudes.
