Post sparks backlash over Singapore stereotypes
Original: Singapore is chinese dubai - built by Indian slaves - awfully humid most of the year - everyone is either tax sheltering
A widely shared post is drawing attention for describing Singapore in inflammatory terms, calling it a "Chinese Dubai" supposedly built by exploited Indian labour, complaining about its humidity, and stereotyping its residents as either wealthy foreigners sheltering tax or corporate office workers. The crude framing has prompted criticism for reducing the city-state and its diverse population to offensive caricatures, while some replies engage with debates over inequality and migrant labour conditions in Singapore.
Why now: The post's provocative and stereotyped characterisation of Singapore generated strong reactions and debate.
