Warming Waters Leave Corals Struggling for Oxygen at Night
Original: Warming Water Leaves Coral Struggling For Oxygen Corals, like us, need oxygen. During the daytime, their symbiotic algae
Scientists explain that corals depend on oxygen just like humans, but warming ocean waters are making it harder for them to get enough. During the day, symbiotic algae photosynthesize and supply plenty of oxygen, but at night corals must draw it from surrounding water by stirring it with tiny hair-like cilia. As water warms, it holds less dissolved oxygen, putting corals under growing nighttime stress.
Why now: Rising ocean temperatures are drawing attention to the physical mechanisms behind coral bleaching and reef decline.
