Chinese Vessels Double Near Disputed Philippine Shoals
Original: Chinese Vessels Double Near Philippine Disputed Shoals
The number of Chinese vessels near disputed shoals in the South China Sea has roughly doubled, drawing concern in the Philippines and among regional observers. Commentators see the surge as a possible show of pressure in the ongoing maritime dispute, amid repeated confrontations between Chinese coast guard ships and Philippine vessels resupplying outposts in the area.
Why now: Rising tensions in the South China Sea are keeping maritime activity near Philippine-claimed features in the spotlight.
