Farmers are making their own fertilizer using microbial methods as prices climb following the Iran war, NPR reports. The approach uses composting techniques to encourage microbes that enrich soil naturally, reducing reliance on costly commercial products. Home gardeners say they already use similar variations with aerobic compost and ash, and the story is resonating with growers looking to cut costs.
Why now: Fertilizer prices have risen sharply due to the Iran war, prompting interest in low-cost alternatives.
