Dengue Outbreak Prompts Warnings Over Wet El Niño Winter
Original: Amid dengue outbreak, mosquito control experts are wary of a wet winter fueled by El Niño
Health and mosquito control experts are warning that a dengue outbreak could worsen as El Niño brings a warmer, wetter winter, creating conditions that let mosquitoes survive and breed through months when they would normally die off. The concern is that standing water from winter rains could sustain mosquito populations and extend the transmission season in affected areas.
Why now: An unusual El Niño-driven wet winter is raising fears that the ongoing dengue outbreak will intensify rather than subside.
