Mathematicians Rushed to Prove Conjecture Before AI Did

Original: As AI Closed In on ‘Unique Games’ Proof, Researchers Raced to Beat the Machines

Researchers working on the Unique Games conjecture accelerated their efforts after realizing artificial intelligence systems were closing in on a proof. The account, published by Quanta Magazine, describes a race between human mathematicians and machine tools to settle a long-standing problem in theoretical computer science. It highlights growing anxiety that machines may soon match humans on deep mathematical work.

Why now: Rising concern that AI is beginning to rival human mathematicians on frontier research problems.
