Writer swaps Synology apps for open-source alternatives

Original: An XDA writer kept his Synology NAS and replaced nearly every Synology app with open ones: Immich, Navidrome, Plex, Jell

An XDA writer described keeping his Synology NAS but replacing nearly all of Synology's own software with open-source alternatives, including Immich for photos, Navidrome and Plex or Jellyfin for media, and Paperless for documents, all running in containers. He argues that once apps are open-source, the NAS becomes just storage, which should also be open, via ZFS, standard drives and Ubuntu or Debian.

Why now: Home server enthusiasts are debating how far to go in replacing vendor-locked NAS software with self-hosted open-source tools.
