A rare surviving stand of American chestnut trees, a species nearly wiped out by blight in the 20th century, is reportedly slated to be cleared to make way for a data center. The plan has drawn criticism from conservationists, who see it as a symbol of valuable technology development taking precedence over endangered natural heritage.

Why now: Growing public anger over data center construction displacing ecologically significant land.
