Physical media will save us from the algorithm
A student newspaper column argues that physical media — DVDs, CDs, vinyl and Blu-rays — offers an escape from streaming platforms and the recommendation algorithms that decide what people watch and hear. The piece taps into a broader revival of physical formats, with collectors and critics arguing that owning media outright restores choice and permanence in an era of shifting catalogs and subscription fatigue.
Why now: Growing frustration with streaming algorithms and a nostalgic revival of DVDs, CDs and vinyl are driving renewed debate about owning media.
