Historical accounts note that on July 7, 1914, Austro-Hungarian Prime Minister Karl von Stürgkh agreed to a secret ultimatum strategy aimed at initiating war against Serbia. Remarkably, he did not inform his own ministers of this rationale when the ultimatum was delivered on July 23, 1914. Commenters say this fact has previously received little attention, shedding light on how the First World War began.
Why now: The anniversary period and fresh historical commentary on the origins of World War I are drawing renewed attention.
