Texas GOP candidates skip debates against Democrats

Original: Most Texas Republicans ignore Democratic calls to debate in statewide races

Most Republican candidates in Texas statewide races are declining invitations to debate their Democratic opponents ahead of the election. Democrats have publicly called for head-to-head debates, but the majority of GOP hopefuls have ignored the requests. With Republicans heavily favored in Texas statewide contests, the refusals are drawing criticism from opponents who argue voters are being denied a chance to compare the candidates directly.

Why now: The midterm election season is underway, and debate refusals are shaping campaign coverage in Texas.
