Florida dengue fever outbreak seen as national warning
Original: Florida’s dengue fever outbreak is a national warning
Florida is experiencing a dengue fever outbreak, and commentators including Bloomberg are framing it as a warning for the wider United States. The mosquito-borne illness, historically rare in the continental US, is appearing more often as warming conditions expand mosquito habitat, raising concerns that other states could face similar outbreaks without stronger public health preparedness.
Why now: Climate change is expanding the range of mosquito-borne diseases into the US, making the Florida outbreak a cautionary signal nationwide.
