Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay poised to join AKP
Original: cemil tugay
Izmir's mayor Cemil Tugay is reported to be preparing to join Turkey's ruling AKP party, prompting widespread searches about who he is. The move would mark a significant defection from the opposition ranks in one of Turkey's largest cities, and commentators are debating what it means for the balance of power in Izmir ahead of future elections.
Why now: News that a major opposition-run city's mayor may defect to Turkey's ruling party is politically sensitive and timely.
