Coco Gauff upset by Mertens at China Open in Beijing

Original: coco gauff

Coco Gauff was knocked out of the China Open in Beijing, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Belgium's Elise Mertens in the round of 16. The defeat denied Gauff an expected quarterfinal against Iga Swiatek. Mertens commented on Gauff after the match, and attention has also focused on the American star's recent profile and controversies surrounding other players at the tournament.

Why now: Gauff's surprise straight-sets loss to Mertens, which cost her a marquee match against Swiatek, has drawn wide international attention.
