Brazil debates healthy ageing and life in older age
Original: envelhecimento
Ageing is drawing attention in Brazil from several angles. Pulmonologist Margareth Dalcolmo warned that anti-vaccine movements threaten healthy ageing, while Palmas city hall took part in a seminar on autonomy and protagonism of elderly people. Celebrities also fuelled the conversation, with Luciana Gimenez, 56, saying she has exercised all her life and urges people to respect their bodies, and actress Paula Burlamaqui discussing her recovery from shoulder surgery.
Why now: Warnings about anti-vaccine movements threatening healthy ageing plus celebrity comments on growing older have put ageing in the spotlight in Brazil.
