Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrava said armed individuals escorting a group of 20 migrants tried to help them cross illegally into Latvia from Belarus and threatened Latvian soldiers, before another group briefly entered the country. The incident adds to tensions on the EU's eastern border, where Latvia and its neighbours accuse Belarus of facilitating irregular migration as a form of pressure.

Why now: Fears are growing that border guards face direct armed threats amid the ongoing migration standoff with Belarus.
