Whale researchers spotted a 30-year-old female orca carrying her dead calf through the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Saturday, off Washington State. Observers describe the behaviour as another instance of orca mothers grieving, pushing the tiny carcass balanced on their nose. The endangered southern resident population has suffered repeated calf losses, and the images are prompting renewed discussion about the pod's struggles.
